URI Mace Project - 2008/2009

The URI
Mace Project is a voluntary effort being undertaken by members of the Ocean
Woodturners with the goal of create a new ceremonial mace for a new
department and building that will focus on
Cellular Biology. The
mace has been designed by the club with a large part of the initial CAD and
layout being performed by Angelo Iafrate. The mace design is a
segmented design with 29 wood segments and a headpiece which will have a
sphere a it's core made from
Cumberlandite.
The 29 segments will be divided into two types, the main segments and
spacer segments which will all be made out of Walnut. The Main
Segments will be made of hardwoods that are all native to Rhode Island.
Team members are encourage to have their piece turned before the March
19th, 2009 meeting and are asked to bring the piece to that meeting.
