Meeting TurnoutIt was a nice crowd of 28 members Sept. 18, the vast majority of them Rhode Islanders. But it was Tony Bancalari who hails from Connecticut who saved the day. We had a slight mix-up as to who was supposed to put on the demonstration but Tony was plugged in at the last moment. Armed with his pocket carving knife, Tony gave us an interesting demo on chip carving. He was entertaining (loved his Brooklyn-bred humor) and had plenty of hints for those Woodturners who would like to embellish their turnings with a little carving. Thanks much Tony—it’s members like you who help make the club! GREAT PICNICLarry Dunklee reports the outing on Sept. 28 was a great success with 23 members attending. Of them, 14 bid on donated items and eight did show & tell. The food was great, says Larry who credited Sue Murray and Ed Lewis for setting up the hall; President Ken was a great auctioneer (what else?) with Jeff Mee assisting. Everyone pitched in with the cleanup. Of course Larry himself was the mover and shaker for this affair. The members paid $115, the auction took in $355 and total expenses were $117. Nice job folks. Show & TellWe have quite a variety this time. Larry Dunklee (rumor has it he sleeps at Woodcraft) made a mortar and pestle out of pine and a wine glass; Rick Sousa produced some fine small bowls with feet; Dennis Hornik produced croquet balls that were inlaid with colored epoxy; Jeff Mee has a variety of pens; George “Segmented” Nazareth showed a bowl in progress, John Chakuroff showed that old shop teachers never rest—he produced some finely machined chuck accessories. (Many members have custom-made lathe accessories thanks to John’s toolmaking skills). Warm Up Your Lathes! We have two challenges coming up. Members are asked to make mushrooms and/or kitchen utensils for the October 16 meeting and for the November meeting you are asked to make holiday ornaments or items. Coming UpDon’t forget—you can sign up for various events at Woodcraft, including how to make turned hat on Oct. 24-26 (limit five people). On Oct-16-19 there will be a garage sale of reconditioned tools at Woodcraft (holiday shopping comes early!) New Magazine ComingThere will be a new magazine coming out next February called Woodturning Design. Our own Angelo Iafrate is penning an article for the venture. The publishers are going to have a raffle for charter subscribers who sign up before the magazine hits the streets. Prizes will be mini-lathes, tools, books and wood.
