Early Newsletter

This newsletter is a bit early because of a special event coming up Saturday, Nov. 15. At the last meeting those in attendance voted to start spending some of our treasury by bringing in professional turners to give demonstrations.

Emilio Iannuccillo has delivered! He has engaged Jim Kephart from Vernon, Conn., to put on a demonstration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a break for lunch. Kephart is a production turner who started out in 1976 as a hobbyist. Since the 1990’s he has become much more serious about turning and specializes in artistic and furniture items. He has given programs at various woodturning seminars and has taught beginning woodturning at the Harris Enterprise in Manchester, Conn. His current focus is on architectural turnings and furniture part restoration. His program Saturday will cover: Spindle turning, his specialty; tool control; safety issues; cutting spindle shafts; tool sharpening; duplicating a piece by hand; using story boards; how to size. The cost of all this is just $10—and includes lunch. The demo will be held at the North Kingstown Free Library off Boone Street in Wickford.

From the north, follow signs to South County on Route 4. Take exit 5-A and follow signs for Wickford. The off ramp will put you on Route 102 south. Take 102 and go through four traffic lights. After the fourth (there’s a Shell station on the right) stay straight, go down the curving hill. Just before the Wickford Elementary School on the left is a left, Boone Street. Take that left and then the first right into the library’s parking lot.

From the south, come up Route 1. Take the Wickford exit. Travel north until the first light. Take a right onto Route 102 and go down the hill to the first left, Boone Street. First right is the library.

From East Bay region, come across the Jamestown Bridge and take the exit for Wickford. Go north on 1-A into Wickford. Once you cross the funky-looking bridge, bear to the left, go past the Wickford Elementary School and take a right onto Boone Street. First right is the library.
Pay at the door. WE NEED TO KNOW IF YOU ARE COMING SO WE CAN PLAN ON FOOD. PLEASE LET RUDI KNOW BY E-MAIL OR PHONE 789-9037.

Meeting Turnout

We had 25 members turn out for the October meeting. Bob Hopkins reported we have $2,010 in the treasury, which prompted a discussion that we should spend the money to subsidize demonstrations by pro turners. It was moved, seconded and voted to have Emilio Iannuccillo try to line up a demonstration before Christmas and either he or Angelo Iafrate try to line someone up after the holidays. The admission fee of $10 was established.

 Show & Tell

Rick Sousa decided to get in the kitchen this time and made a rolling pin out of tiger maple. He also made some nifty spoons. Ron Chatterley produced a gavel made out of Corian; Larry Dunklee produced a garlic press; Bob Iuliano showed his latest creation, a mad-hatters hat as a prelude to a three-day workshop to be held at Woodcraft; George Nazareth produced a segmented vase with a scalloped edge.

New Videos

New videos are in (three by Tobias Kaye) and it was decided that they will be rented out for $1. a month. Bill Smith says he has evaluations on most of the videos the club owns. See him to rent videos.
IT’S TIME for the nominating committee to meet. On the committee are Larry Dunklee, Mike Murray and Tom Schwab.

 Membership Cards

A discussion was held on the club’s policy of issuing membership cards, which are honored by Woodcraft for 10 percent discounts on merchandise other than power tools and benches. Jeff Mee said there is evidence that some people have joined the club merely to get the discount card. One suggestion was to make a rule that discounts only apply on the night of club meetings. Jeff said George Snyder, Woodcraft’s owner, is not complaining about the situation. But it does appear that with more than 100 members and an average turnout of 30 members there are a number of members who do not participate, giving credence that they may be joined for an ulterior motive. President Ken D’Ambrosio suggested that the current system remain in place but that the matter may be revisited.Don’t forget—you can sign up for various events at Woodcraft, including how to make turned hat on Oct. 24-26 (limit five people). On Oct-16-19 there will be a garage sale of reconditioned tools at Woodcraft (holiday shopping comes early!)

Pen Demo

For the demo, Jeff Mee and Chris Horn combined efforts to make a pen with Jeff doing the narration and Chris working a mini-lathe. It was an interesting demonstration and the pen that was made was put into the raffle at the end of the meeting.
