Meeting Turnout

We had  a good turnout for the November meeting—37 persons showed up.

PRO DEMONSTRATIONS

President Ken D’Ambrosio reported that the Nov. 15 demo by turner Jim Kephart was well received. The main problem was the event was booked so quickly, some members could not adjust their schedules to attend. There were about 20+ members who made it. Thanks to Emilio Iannuccillo for many the arrangements. It was reported that $180 was taken in at the event. There is a video of it. Emilio is working on other demos. Angelo Iafrate noted that Lyle Jaimeson is coming east in the fall and he might make a good demo for the club. It is possible that Connecticut might attract him and therefore bringing him here would not be too costly. A lengthy discussion ensued but in the end it was agreed and voted  that the club would strive to have two demos by pros a year

DISPLAY

Ken said he had some turnings that were donated by Bob Rosann for an auction but he suggested that they in turn be put in a display that could be placed at Woodcraft. The turnings on display could be rotated. Larry Dunklee volunteered to make a case for the display.

TWINNING

George Nazareth reported that several persons are now in the twinning project with the club in England and he welcomes more to get involved. Mainly it involves an exchange of e-mail messages at this point.

FREE LESSONS

Ken announced that with the end of the gardening season, he is again willing to give free lessons to club members at his home on Sundays. All members have to do is call him to make an appointment. He will not take more than 3 persons at a time. Recently both Dick Murphy and Paul Pasquariello took Ken up on his offer and said they really learned a lot. Members interested in free lessons should call him at 295-0987.

NOMINATIONS

It’s that time of year again—election of officers. Larry Dunklee reported the following persons are interested in officer positions.

President: Ken D’Ambrosio and Jeff Mee

Vice President: Steve Imms

Treasurer: Bob Hopkins

Secretary: George Nazareth and Ann Danis

Since both Ken and Jeff are seeking the presidency there will be an election at the Dec. 18 meeting. The other positions are uncontested (Ann and George will join forces to be secretary which includes doing the monthly newsletter and getting out e-mail notices. Ann reports for active military duty next summer and so a replacement will have to be found then).

As a result there will be an election to choose the next president on Dec. 18. Under the bylaws there is no provision for absentee ballots so only persons who attend the meeting can vote. The type of balloting is to be decided at the meeting.

WOODCRAFT SHOW

Member Rick Sousa did a great job demonstrating for woodcraft the art of turning green wood.

DEMONSTRATION

Angelo Iafrate put on a great demonstration on natural edge bowl turning. As usual, Angelo, who used to make a living at turning, did a great job. But the large turnout at the session demonstrated that the club should regularly televise the demonstrations onto a TV monitor so that everyone can see the techniques involved close up. The club needs a couple of volunteers to set up a TV monitor system for each meeting. Woodcraft has a monitor and Rudi Hempe has loaned a video camera to the club.

LATHES FOR LOAN

Our club owns two lathes than can be loaned out to members. One is a Jet mini-lathe than can be borrowed one month at a time. The other is a large Jet that can be borrowed for two months at a time. If you want to borrow a lathe, contact Curtis Mason at 828-7245.

SHOW & TELL

Larry Dunklee made a paperweight with an imbedded watch; Jean Schwinn made a table ornament; Jodi Imms made three ornaments; Bill Smith made two; George Nazareth made a segmented ornament; Mike Murray, Jeff Mee and Rick Sousa each showed hats they made and Rick Sousa showed two bowls.

CLASSIFIED AD DEPT.

The club was contacted by Pete Skeffington of Glocester who has a load of small logs of English walnut that he says are suitable for small turnings. He is a bowl turner and the wood is too small for bowls. The logs are 6 to 9 inch in diameter and 12-17 inches long. There are other logs that could make 16-inch bowls. If anyone is interested call him at 647-2118 or pskeffin@earthlink.net.

A PERSONAL NOTE:

I have been secretary of Ocean Woodturners since Ken, Bruce Arnold and I founded the club in 1492. It has been a joy to see the club grow in size from the 14 original members to the 100-plus we have today. Recently I became president of the URI Master Gardener Association, a position I was not supposed to take on for another two years. This is a very large operation involving close to 700 members, a budget that is rapidly approaching 6 figures and innumerable meetings and commitments as the Master Gardener mission grows at URI. As a result I feel I have to relinquish some of the other volunteer activities I have been doing. One of them is secretary of Ocean Woodturners.

In a way, it is timely for me to step down. I feel a club this size needs a newsletter that is more polished and sophisticated than I have been able to provide. Other clubs have newsletters with photos and lots of other features. With today’s technology, such a newsletter could be put together and sent out via e-mail but I simply do not have the time to devote to such a publication.

George Nazareth and Ann Danis have decided to join up to do the newsletter and other secretarial duties. I will turn over to them all the materials I have and I’m sure they will do a great job.

I will remain a member and you will see me at meetings, but I just feel at this juncture I have to shed some activities.  –Rudi Hempe
