Meeting Turnout

As is usual in the summer, we had a modest number of people show up for the July 17 meeting—26.

The Program

Those who attended were treated to the first showing of a video made by Bill Smith showing George Nazareth’s method of making segmented bowls. It was a fascinating procedure and Bill did a great job in making the video. One thought is to send the tape to our Twinning club in England but it would have to be converted for their TV system there. Any members have any thoughts on this?

 Make-A-Wish Foundation

President Ken D’Ambrosio  reported that the sale of turned objects at the Wickford Art Festival brought in $1,000 for the Make A Wish Foundation. At the August meeting representatives of the Foundation will be on hand to accept the check. Attending will be Mary Lou Schoettler, a member of the foundation’s board of directors, Dr. Diane Hackney the foundation’s executive director and a youngster who benefited from one of the foundation’s grants. We could use a photo of the check presentation for our website. If someone could bring a digital camera to the August 21 meeting, please do so.

 Annual Outing

The annual outing is all set for Sunday, Sept. 28 at the Cold Spring Community Center, just south of Wickford. This is a waterfront location and in case of bad weather, we have shelter. The format has been changed—instead of grilling steaks, we decided to have hot dogs and hamburgers. As a result the cost has been dropped to $5 per member. Members can bring a guest FREE. Obviously we need a headcount for this event. Please e-mail or call Jean Schwinn at 885-4125 (djschwinn@aol.com)  by Sept. 18. You must pay by that date also. As for the fundraising auction you can bring anything you wish. A portion of the proceeds will go to Make A Wish Foundation.

 Twinning Program

The Twinning Project with the Hampshire Woodturners Club in England is growing slowly. George Nazareth reports that eight of our members are paired with counterparts in England. Mostly the back and forth communication is just Across the Pond information much of it unrelated to woodturnings. If you will like to be paired with someone in England see George or contact him at 333-6119 or (georgeanddolores@cox.net).

 Show & Tell

We had several interesting pieces at the meeting. Rick Sousa produced several small pieces including a bowl of curly maple and a free form box. Ron Chatterley produced a segmented bowl ouut of pecan—Ron has been turning only six months; Curtis Mason produced a segmented bowl of ash, black walnut and mahogany using a design in a magazine that showed how to make a bowl out of laminated pieces of 2 by 4s; Larry Dunklee made a wedding goblet out of cherry burl.

 Monthly Raffle

The Monthly Raffle was made possible by Curtis Mason who donated three bundles of cypress. If you have some excess wood in your shops, the club welcomes donations for the raffle.

See you on Aug. 21 and don’t forget the outing.
